Police accused of murdering Italian yachtsman on Venezuela's Margarita Island

VHeadline News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue reports: Three police officers have been arrested for alleged connection to the murder of an Italian yachtsman on Venezuela's tourist paradise, Margarita Island.
Emiliano Astore was shot dead during a robbery on his yacht.
The Attorney General's Office has issued a statement, confirming that the three officers were attached to the Institute of Nueva Esparta State Police and with the participation of another person were allegedly involved in the robbery and the Italian's death.
Astore was found inside a shot aboard his yacht on August 27.
The arrested civilian was the owner of a launch that brought the three police to the yacht anchored outside of the marina.
The 36-year-old Italian was sailing alone and had arrived on the island on August 23 but was unable to dock because his papers were not in order.
Margarita Island also was witness to another murder of Dutch citizen, Mererck Hendrick (35) who was shot dead by muggers for a gold chain.
For people traveling in yachts, Venezuelan has been on red alert for some time because of threats of pirates and general insecurity. A number of attacks have taken place on passing yachts.
In an effort to tackle the high level of crime, the government has announced that it will be checking all passengers coming and going from the island on ferry from the mainland and those arriving by plane.
Tourism Minister Alejandro Fleming has just announced that he intends to make Venezuela an attractive international tourism destination again but international tour operators are not holding their breath.
Margarita island had been a traditional tourist attraction mostly for European and Canadian vacationers and cruise ships.
Over the last three decades international tourism has declined drastically and not just because of the crime rate but also owing to a drop in standards demanded by tourist operators and state indifference.
Venezuelan holiday-makers from the mainland have been propping the tourist industry on the tropical paradise.

4 men jailed as suspects in killing of Italian tourist in Venezuela

By The Associated Press (CP) –

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan authorities say they have arrested four suspects in the killing of an Italian tourist shot to death on his sailboat.

The attorney general's office said Tuesday that the four men arraigned as suspects in the slaying include three police officers and a local boat owner accused of ferrying them to the sailboat.

The body of 36-year-old Emiliano Astore was found aboard his boat "Yunkano Miami" on Aug. 29 while it was moored at Margarita Island.

Police suspect Astore may have been shot during a robbery.

The attorney general's office said in a statement that two laptop computers belonging to Astore were found in the home of one of the three police officers who were arrested on Sunday.

(AFP) – September 6

CARACAS — Three police officers have been arrested in connection with the killing and apparent robbery of an Italian tourist off the Venezuelan Caribbean resort island of Margarita, prosecutors said Monday.

"Prosecutors will name three employees of the Nueva Esparta state police (where Margarita is located) as well as another man, apparently implicated in the homicide of Italian national Emiliano Astore," prosecutors said in a statement.

It noted that Astore's body was found with several gunshot wounds in his sailboat on August 27.

Astore, 36, was traveling alone when he tried to dock at Margarita, one of Venezuela's top tourist draws, on August 23. He allegedly did not have his documents in order and never docked.

Margarita thieves recently shot a Dutchman to death while trying to make off with a gold chain.
